A commission is (1) an authorization to perform certain duties or tasks, or to take on certain powers, (2) authority to act in behalf of another, (3) an entrusting, as of power, authority, etc., to a person or body.
The Great Commission is to make disciples who will continue to do what Jesus did.
And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen (Matthew 28:18-20 KJV).
Many people are confused about this. Simply
proclaiming the Gospel to everyone, using tools like radio, television,
and publications is not enough. Even when a person confesses faith in
Jesus Christ, the job is not done.
The Great Commission of Jesus is not just to preach the Gospel to
everyone, but to make disciples so the Gospel can be effectively preached
to everyone. The Great Commission includes teaching disciples to do all
the things Jesus taught his original disciples to do.
